A 2013 idea, finally good enough in 2026.
LearnHL7 did not come out of a market study. It came out of a realization made over ten years ago, and still not fixed: HL7 is taught badly.
2013
The final-year project
A didactic system to understand hospital information exchange (HL7 and HIS), built with the tools of the time: Java, Visual Basic, MySQL, Mirth Connect, HAPI.
2026
The remaster
The same idea, with today's tech: an interactive, free, bilingual site where you learn HL7 v2 and FHIR by handling real messages.
The problem has not moved
In 2013, learning HL7 meant reading austere specifications or soulless blog posts. Thirteen years later, it is still the case, and on top of that people sell in-person courses for hundreds of euros to explain what should be free and crystal clear.
Meanwhile, the tech changed completely. You can now run a full editor in a browser, explain a field on click, translate a value into plain language in real time. Everything that was missing in 2013 exists today. It was time to pick the project back up.
Our stance
We do not do documentation, we do experience. You do not read a segment's definition, you click it and watch it explain itself. You do not stare at a screenshot, you handle the real message. And every example is rooted in a concrete clinical case, because data makes sense when it tells a real patient's story.
Everything touching the standard is verified against official sources before it ships. On a technical subject, trust is earned on accuracy, and lost at the first mistake.
Who is behind it
The project is led by a sleep technologist with twenty years of experience in hospital interoperability. HL7 is not theory to him: it is what he sees flowing every day between a lab and a patient record. Those real cases, especially from sleep medicine, feed the site's examples.
